4 tips to get the maximum out of a convention

1. Write down three takeaways per session

With a day filled with interesting speakers, there is a lot to take in. Expect to drop down deadbeat at the end of the day, so make sure to take notes through the day.  Collect them in a way that makes it easy to access when you return to the office (pen and paper, laptop, tablet, smartphone). If you really want something to stick, limit yourself to three takeaways per session. Ideally, they will be the food for thought that will spark those specific to do’s when back at the office.

2. Talk to speakers

Don’t be afraid to approach the speakers after their sessions. They are there to help you and above all are experts in their field. They love to share their thought and insights, why else would they be there. Hang around and ask your prepared question. If you still have doubts about your interpretation of their answer… ask for a business card so you can follow up. Ask whether they are on LinkedIn or other social media that you can connect through.

3. Hang around and mingle

If there is business to be done, this is the moment. Social events are a great opportunity to really connect and get to know one another. Let’s face it, business is done by people, not by numbers. In short, push yourself a bit and just be who you are. Everyone has an interesting story to tell. Make sure to check any stand holder or sponsor booths, they are there because they think they are relevant to you… And probably they are! So chat away.

4. Mute your Smartphone

We know, this is a lot to ask, because you have so many emails and texts waiting, but every moment you are interacting with your phone you are not chatting and not paying attention. A complete conversation killer! If you are a social maniac and can’t detach from your device, just take notes and allow yourself to tweet about the takeaways you have written down. At least you’ll contribute to a conversation online.
